OXPIP Associates Programme

We offer a 15-month post qualification training in parent-infant psychotherapy. It draws on psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theory, attachment, theories of inter-subjectivity and neuroscience and will support the trainee to develop their skills in engaging and working with parents and babies presented with a wide range of issues. Associates will be offered an OXPIP based clinical placement in one of our satellite projects, and will be required to complete a minimum of 90 clinical hours with parent-infant dyads to the required standard. The course will also develop reflective practice and the capacity for working with other professionals and thinking about the network around the family.

The Associate Programme is the route through which the majority of OXPIP's Clinicians have joined the team.

Who is the training suitable for?

Psychotherapists, counsellors, clinical psychologists, art therapists and other suitably qualified mental health professionals who wish to specialise in parent infant psychotherapy. Applicants must have a minimum of two years post-qualification clinical experience working with children and/or adults. Applicants must also have current professional clinical registration with a recognised professional body such as UKCP, BCP, ACP, BPS, or BACP.

What are the requirements?

The programme is suitable for professionals who have a qualification in any of the following:  psychotherapy, counselling, psychology, arts therapies, medicine, or social work, or  who have experience of working in a related professional capacity therapeutically with parents and babies in groups or individual families. Applicants are expected to have a good grasp of infant mental health, adult mental health, and attachment theory, to have experience of baby observation and to have had their own personal psychodynamic therapy. Applicants have to be accredited psychotherapists, psychologists, or counsellors with (or working towards accreditation with) a recognised professional body (such as UKCP, BCP, BPS, or BACP), or who has (or is working towards) a qualification in a related core profession. This course is not recommended for parents of children under 2 years old.

Assessment is an ongoing part of the learning process, done formally through joint reflection with the supervisor and tutor. OXPIP associates will be encouraged to learn and develop through recognising the strengths in their practice and identifying working points or challenges. Associates will be required to keep a reflective work journal electronically, which will be discussed with the tutor on a regular basis.

What does the training include?

The training includes attendance on five of our short courses: Attachment, Emotional Regulation in Pregnancy, Assessing Parent-Infant Relationships (APIR), Ghosts in the Nursery and Watch, Wait and Wonder. Associates will be learning through experience, through participating in OXPIP’s activities with colleagues, and through guided independent learning and reflective practice. They will work with parents and infants, with other professionals, take part in supervision, seminars, training days, and they will reflect by reading and writing.

All OXPIP training is APPCIOS endorsed and contributes towards APPCIOS accreditation. APPCIOS (The Association for Psychodynamic Practice and Counselling in Organisational Settings), is a member organisation of the British Psychoanalytic Council.
